Boat building is an ancient practice that is still commonplace today, boat builders are skilled in the construction and techniques involved in the manufacture of boats. Boat builders need to be highly skilled as the construction of a boat, particularly a water tight hull that can effectively part the water as the boat moves along is not a simple procedure.
Boats were traditionally made from wood, and many boat builders still utilised the traditional methods that are involved in manufacturing wooden boats. The method used to create a curved wooden hull by boat builders is known as a carvel and is a technique similar to that used to make traditional wooden barrels. An alternate technique used by boat builders to achieve a curve in a wooden hull is known as clinker building, this method requires the boat builder to layer planks over one another with an over lapped and the method that was typically used to create Viking long boats. Both of these techniques, as with all wooden hull constructions will require the boat builder to apply some form of water proofing substances to keep the hull watertight.
There are other aspects that boat builders will have to take into consideration such as the decking, mast and rudders and what sort of materials will be used to construct them. There is a great deal of planning that a boat builder must go through before construction of a boat can take place.
